Updated: Apr 9

Chances are, there have been many changes in your life recently. The coronavirus pandemic may have uprooted your family life, your academics, and your extracurriculars. These abrupt changes, along with any other stress and anxiety you might typically experience, can take a toll on your mental health. It’s important to remember that your mental health is just as crucial as your physical health.

Below are some tips that can help you take care of mental well-being. Share this article to a friend, family member, co-worker or someone you care about.

Communicate:

One of the best things to do is to simply talk to someone about the problems or stress you might be experiencing. Whether it be a teacher, counselor, parent, sibling, or friend, talking to another person can help you understand your own emotions on another level. It is also important to surround yourself with positive people who will support you through difficult times. It is always OK to ask for help. You also can always say a prayer to God when you need a friend to talk to. He is always there and ready to listen to you.

Keep a journal:

Writing down your thoughts and emotions can help you feel a sense of relief. Even if you do not communicate these feelings with other people, you will get a better sense of what might be bothering you. Putting something down on paper can make these thoughts feel more real and valid.

There are many prompts you can journal about including:

Take time to do whatever makes you feel relaxed. Try watching your favorite T.V. show or comedy channel, eating your favorite dessert, getting outside, or talking to a friend. It is very important to have balance in your life, especially during stressful times. Watching motivational videos can also help to boost your positive energy.

Help other people:

Caring for others can help you build strong relationships. It can also can make you feel fulfilled or good about yourself. Try volunteering if possible. It’s a good way to meet new people who might share similar interests. Also, texting and calling family, friends, and classmates to check on them and ask how they are can make you feel better. Someone may be going through the same thing as you and you can both talk about your experiences, challenges, and help each other feel better about them.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, that is OK. Try to pick just one of these tips to focus on this week. Then, when you are comfortable, try adding another goal. You can focus on adding a new goal each week. By giving your mental and physical health the attention they need, you will not only feel and look better, but you will also set yourself up for success in other areas of your life. Remember to take it a day at a time, and though there are things that you cannot control, you can control your mindset and take action to be the best version of yourself.
